WRECK DIVING
Other UK Resources & Information
On this page you will find information about dive operators
or particular dive sites that are famous for wreck diving, along
with information that is particular to the subject, but doesn't
really fit elsewhere within the collection of pages. But where
do we start? Scapa Flow in The Orkney Isles, a location considered
by many as the home of British wreck & technical diving,
would appear to be a logical place to begin with...
|
Scapa Flow is a natural harbour some 12 miles across, almost
completely enclosed by the Orkney Islands. Its sheltered waters
have offered a safe haven to shipping since the days of the Vikings.
It was in Scapa Flow that the entire German High Seas Fleet was
interned at the end of World War 1. This huge fleet was developed
by Germany in an arms race with Britain, the world empire of
the time. While Germany's fate was decided at the armistice negotiations
in Versailles, Rear Admiral Lugwig Von Reuter was in command
of the Fleet. On the 21st June 1919 the British Grand Fleet left
Scapa Flow on exercise for the first time since the end of the
war. Von Reuter seized the opportunity to prevent the German
Fleet falling into the hands of the British and gave the order
to scuttle the entire Fleet. |

The European Technical
Dive Centre:
Probably one of the largest and most well known operators in
this part of the world, based at The Seal Colonies, Orphir, Orkney
on a purpose built 6 acre site, the ETDC has all the latest equipment
and is a PADI, IANTD
& TDI training facility. They provide a full range of courses
in addition to dive charters along with activities for the non
diving members of the family. With their range of dive boats,
from the ex. naval diving research vessel and liveabord MV
Loyal Mediator, to smaller day boats and RIBs there is something
for everybody.

As mentioned elsewhere within this section, wreck diving is particularly
popular in the UK where a combination of wars, bad weather and
human error have left our coastline strewn with wrecks of all
manner of shipping and types of vessels. From coastal fishing
vessels and deep sea trawlers, to warships and submarines, there
are many different types of wreck available to the diver. Listed
below are a few other areas of interest along with some useful
dive charter and dive holiday resources... |
|
OTHER SITES IN SCOTLAND |
There are many areas of the Scottish coastline, surrounding both
the mainland and the islands that, are synonymous with wreck
and technical diving. These include, the Clyde, Oban, Mull, The
Hebrides and Tiree. Dive resources for these areas include;
The Puffin Dive Centre
and Alchemy Diving
in Oban, The MV Brendan
operating throughout Mull, Oban & The Hebrides. For the Clyde
area try Clyde Diving
Charters. The number of diving operators in this part of
the country is extensive and a quick look in the classified adverts
of any UK diving magazine will reveal many more possibilities.
A visit to The Hebrides,
Shetland Islands
or Orkney Isles Tourist
Authority sites will also be useful. |
|
THE NORTH EAST COAST |
One of the most popular diving destinations on the North East
coast is The Farne Islands
and Seahouses. This area which includes St. Abbs & Eyemouth
is a regular haunt of club members and dive trips are organised
each year. For further advice try speaking with the club secretary
or club diving officers who's details can be found on the club contacts page. Another useful
source of information is the book, Dive St. Abbs & Eyemouth
by Lawson Wood which can be obtained by mail order from the
DiverNet book shop and
is published by Underwater World Publications. |
|
WALES & THE SOUTH WEST |
I'll start this sub-section with Pembrokeshire
Dive Charters who, apart from being a well respected (and
well advertised) dive charter operation, also provide a full
range of RYA Radio & Boat handling courses. (I met some of
the staff, who appeared very friendly and knowledgeable, at Dive 2000) They can be contacted
by e-mail on sales@gopdc.co.uk.
Another operator in the area is Dive
Pembrokeshire UK who offer a range of courses and Wreck
Discovery Breaks.
The South West coast of England is probably nearly as well
known for its wreck diving as Scapa Flow in Scotland. Some of
the most famously reported ship wrecks in British waters have
occurred along these stretches of coastline. Skin-Deep
Diving of Weymouth operate throughout the year and offer,
a popular and successful range of Winter Weekend breaks between
November and March. Apart from the normal B&B, they can also
arrange bunkhouse hostel type accommodation at £10 per
night per person, very reasonable! Other resources for the area
include;
Seaways Diving &
Seaquest Charters
in Falmouth, Dive
Action of Helston Cornwall who provide a full range of courses,
equipment and Hard Boat & RIB charters and last but by no
means least, the PADI 5* IDC, Teignmouth
Diving Centre in South Devon catering for all divers from
beginner to the advanced. As a final note for this sub-section,
Cornish Diving Services
who are primarily a scuba equipment retailer (with reasonable
prices) also arrange and provide dive charter and courses in
the area. |
|
SOUTH COAST & CHANNEL ISLANDS |
The English Channel has got to be one, if not the, busiest shipping
area in the world. It was also a prime shopping centre
for submarine targets during WWII and, as a consequence of this,
it probably holds one of the largest selection of wrecks anywhere.
Some of the diving resources in this part of the UK include;
Wight Wreck Diving
of Portsmouth, MV
Spartacus, MV Girl Gray,
and MV Grey Viking
II of Brighton. White
Horse Charters in Dorset operate both local dive trips and
liveaboard trips to dive the D-Day wrecks of Normandy. For limited
Channel Island information and in particular Guernsey see HERE. |
|
NORTHERN IRELAND & EIRE |
County Cork in Eire has several dive operators; Aquaventures
Dive Centre, a PADI/BSAC/TDI training facility, Baltimore
Diving located on the waters edge with accommodation and
restaurant and, the Ocean
Discovery Centre in West Cork, to name just three. At the
Aquaventures & Baltimore operations you will find excellent
facilities and, the oportunity to dive Europe's largest German
Submarine wreck U-260. Another area that caters for divers is
Co. Kerry and here you will find the Skellig
Aquatics Dive Centre. |
|
The comprehensive and searchable database of Dive Centres, Dive
Sites & Air Stations throughout the UK at the Dogs
Breath Divers website is worthy of a visit and, as a final
link, don't forget the DiverNet
site which is busting with wreck diving information! |
